Kidney Research UK
Across the UK approximately 3million people are at risk of developing chronic kidney failure. The charity is therefore working hard to understand more about the kidney and how treatments and early diagnosis can be improved.
At any one time Kidney Research UK will have up to £10million invested in the latest cutting edge research projects throughout the country however there is still much more to be done with your help!
The Need We Have
- 8000 people are waiting for an organ transplant
- 90% of those require a kidney
- £30,000 is the annual cost of providing dialysis for one patient
- A transplant does not last indefinitely – on average ten years
- The Charity can only fund one in five research projects
The Positive Difference Your Donation Can Make
Funds raised from your generosity could support an exciting research project like Professor Mike Nicholson’s Normothermic Perfusion study at Leicester University.
This is a revolutionary new process through which a form of resuscitation occurs, which allows doctors to improve the quality of kidneys taken from deceased organ donors. By flushing donor kidneys with warm oxygenated blood prior to transplantation, Normothermic Perfusion reverses the damage caused when organs are in transit between donor and recipient where they are stored at low temperatures.
Ultimately this process will increase the lifespan of a transplant – currently at only ten to fifteen years. The Charity needs further funding to enable this technique to be taken onto more clinical trials - with your help this can be achieved.
Pleasingly early results indicate that the procedure has been successful in eighteen out of nineteen patients.
